ＵＳ湾岸警備隊捜索打ち切り決定
アラスカ・デイリーニューズ新聞の内容の事実をアメリカの湾岸警備隊に確認したところ、漂流物はその後見つけられず、湾岸警備隊はその後の捜索を打ち切る決定を下したとのこと。詳しくはアラスカ・デイリーニューズ新聞のウェブサイトをご参照下さい。
US Coastguard has suspended search
We have confirmed the story in The Alaska Daily News that after being unable to relocate the floating debris they spotted a few days ago the US Coastguard do not intend to continue searching for Michio Kanda.
The Coastguard have now issued a press release about suspending the search.

Coastguard sighted objects floating in the North Pacific – may or may not be related
The US Coastguard’s Seventeenth District in Juneau are reporting that they’ve spotted something floating in the sea almost 300 miles northeast of Kanda-san’s last known position. At this point we don’t know whether this is related or not, but they’ve sent a ship to investigate. See their press release for more details.

The US Coast Guard have obtained satellite phone records showing that Kanda-san turned on his phone and tried to make a call at 18:26 UTC on 2008-01-31, at the following position:
44 degrees, 44 minutes North
176 degrees, 37 minutes West
This is slightly later, and further east, than our previous last recorded contact.
2008年２月４日（現地時間）ジュノー・US湾岸警備隊からの報告
US湾岸警備隊は航空機HC−130ハーキュリーズとUS空軍機C-130を使って捜索を続けている。同じ航空機を使用して10時（アラスカ・ジューノの現地時間）更なる捜索を始める(ハワイ・アリューシャン標準時間では日の出）。コンピュータによる漂流種ミレーションを使用してカプセルの現在位置を見積もっている。コンピュータのシュミレーションと気象観測に基づき、明日から北東の更なる広域に捜索範囲を拡大する。
湾岸警備隊のA−378フット（約118m）の長さの小型船が現場に向かっている—２月７か８日の到着を想定している。船はヘリコプターも乗せており、もしも天気が許すのであれば、飛行させることが出来る。
Report from US Coastguard in Juneau, 2008-02-04 local time
The US Coast Guard are continuing their search, using an HC-130 Hercules aircraft and an US Air Force C-130 aircraft. They are planning more searches are planned tomorrow using the same aircraft beginning at about 1000 local (sunrise for Hawaii-Aleutian time).
They are using computer-aided drift simulation to estimate the current position of the capsule. Based on these computer simulations and weather observations, they are explanding tomorrow to the Northeast to encompass a larger area.
A 378 foot Coast Guard cutter is on its way – estimated arrival 7 or 8 February. They have a helicopter on board, which they will use if weather allows.

Press conference in the US
We will be holding a press conference in the US at 4pm PST on 2008-02-04 (Monday) .
The content will be largely identical to the content of the press conference held in Japan on 2008-02-02, since there have been few significant developments since then.
It will be held at Derek Hancock’s house in Portland, Oregan.
Chika Edgar and Laura Hancock will attend in person, and members of the support team in Japan will participate by phone.

脱出用カプセルの写真：前回の2004年の際の救助のもの
下の写真は神田さんの2004年に太平洋横断に挑戦した前回、海に自分自身で気球を操作して着水して、航海中の船に救出された際に撮られたものです。プロパンガスのタンクが左側の下側と上側の横に付いているのが確認出来ます。それらは4方向へ広がっていてカニの様な形をしていて、カプセル自体が真ん中にあったとのことです。
私たちは今回の脱出用カプセルにもまたプロパンガスのタンクが付いていたかが分からないのですが、もしくは神田さんが自分でカプセルにタンクが当たるのを避けるために切り離したかもしれません。
捜索救助続行中、しかし機械的な問題が本日妨げに
日本時間約19時にアラスカ州首都ジュノーにある17地区US湾岸警備隊に連絡したところ、神田さんをまだ捜索中ですが、今のところなんの進展を得られてないとの確認。彼らの捜索船・ラッシュの機械的な問題のせいで捜索機の内の１台派遣の遅延があって彼らの捜索の一時的な妨げになっているとのこと。他の捜索船が現地に向かっているが到着が現地時間２月５日になる。
Escape Capsule Photo from the previous rescue in 2004
The picture below was taken on Kanda-san’s last attempt to cross the Pacific in 2004 when he made a controlled sea landing and was rescued by a passing ship. You can just about make out the propane tanks on the lower-left side and in the top-left corner. These were splayed out in four directions, forming the shape of a crab, with the capsule itself in the middle.
We are not sure whether the escape capsule will also be attached to the propane tanks on this occasion, or whether Kanda-san would have cut himself loose to avoid the tanks smashing into the capsule.

Search and rescue – continuing, but hampered today by mechanical problems
We called the US Coastguard 17th District in Juneau at about 19:00 JST and they confirmed that they’re still out looking for Kanda-san, but with no success so far. Their efforts have been partly hampered by (independently occurring) mechanical problems, which have left the cutter Rush out of action and delayed the dispatch of one of their planes. Another ship is on the way to replace the Rush, but it’s not expected to be on the scene until 2008-02-05 local time.
